How to choose a dating site
Updated October 2026
The right dating site is the one where the people you want to meet are already active. Five questions get you there faster than any feature list.
1. What are you actually looking for?
This matters more than anything else, because each site attracts a different crowd.
- A long-term relationship or marriage: paid sites like Match and eharmony, or Hinge if you're under 40.
- Something casual: Tinder and Bumble have the biggest pools.
- An open relationship, or meeting other couples: lifestyle sites like SDC and Feeld.
2. How old are you, and how old are the people you want to meet?
Swipe apps skew young. If you're over 50, sites built for your age group, like OurTime, put you in front of more people who fit. Match also has a large over-50 membership.
3. Do you want a particular community?
If sharing a faith or identity is your first filter, a focused site saves time. See our list of the best sites for faith and community.
4. Will you pay?
Paying usually means a more serious crowd, because casual browsers rarely pay. But Hinge, Bumble and HER all have free versions good enough to meet people. Our guide on whether paying is worth it goes deeper.
5. How much does safety matter to you?
It should matter a lot. Look for photo or ID verification and a clean record on data breaches. We weight safety at 25% of every score for this reason.
Try two sites at once. Running two side by side for a month tells you quickly which one has the people you want.
